Situated almost directly next to the Swiss border, crossed by the Mera River, Chiavenna is the jewel of the valley of the same name. Renowned for its artistic and cultural beauty, its rich gastronomic tradition, and its slow lifestyle, it is a Slow City, awarded the Orange Flag, a mark of environmental and tourism quality from the Italian Touring Club. Typical of Chiavenna are the "Crotti," natural cellars formed under the rocks of ancient landslides, which breathe the "Sorel," a constant-temperature air current, cool in summer and warm in winter, making it the ideal environment for maturing wine and curing cured meats and sausages.
Probably of Etruscan origin, Chiavenna was a Roman station and an important trading point between Italy and the rest of Europe.
Chiavenna is full of hidden corners and views that never fail to captivate visitors. To discover and appreciate this jewel of the Valchiavenna, a stroll through the historic center is a must, including crossing the bridge over the Mera River, which offers one of the most evocative views of the town.
During a visit to Chiavenna, a tour of the many historic buildings and museums that distinguish this splendid town is a must. Palazzo Vertemate is certainly noteworthy. The complex includes a palace, outbuildings, and a series of green spaces with diverse functional characteristics. It stands at the northern edge of the town of Prosto, isolated from the village of Piuro, destroyed by the landslide of 1618.
Near Chiavenna, more specifically in the municipality of Piuro, the Acquafraggia Waterfalls are a must-see. They were even mentioned and praised by Leonardo da Vinci during his trip to Valchiavenna. Visible from the road, the waterfalls are considered the most important natural monument and therefore one of the undisputed symbols of Valchiavenna. In addition to the Acquafraggia Waterfalls, Piuro is famous for its archaeological excavations, so much so that it is considered "the Pompeii of the Alps," having also been the site of a natural disaster in the past: the landslide of 1618 that destroyed the village.
Two important nature reserves are also worth a visit: the Parco delle Marmitte dei Giganti, characterized by cylindrical cavities carved into the soapstone 10,000 years ago by the erosive action of water, and the Pian di Spagna Reserve, a large wetland of European naturalistic interest, home to numerous species of migratory birds.
